  • Profile OpenUp Music is a Bristol-based national charitable company, with a unique mission – empowering young, disabled musicians to build inclusive youth orchestras. We work with these young people to develop accessible instruments and repertoire, challenge expectations and raise aspirations. Together we open up musical progression routes through the creation of great music.

    The organisation was founded in 2007 as the MUSE Project and relaunched in 2014 as OpenUp Music. Since 2014 OpenUp Music has launched 17 of the UK’s first special school orchestras through our “Open School Orchestras” programme, addressing a near total lack of orchestral provision within these contexts. Delivered in partnership with music education hubs, arts organisations and schools across England, Open School Orchestras provides young disabled people (aged 7-18) with opportunities to play in a school ensemble and perform.

    In September 2015 OpenUp Music launched the South-West Open Youth Orchestra – the UK’s first disabled-led regional youth orchestra – in partnership with The British Paraorchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Bristol Music Trust. This orchestra provides a unique musical progression route for young musicians who were previously disabled by, and therefore excluded from, more conventional regional youth orchestras. Our goal is to establish a National Open Youth Orchestra - the world’s first national disabled-led youth orchestra - by 2018.

Job description & requirements

  • Job description WHAT DOES THIS ROLE INVOLVE?

    - Working with the CEO to achieve the agreed fundraising, business and operational priorities of the charity, over the short, medium and long term.
    - Developing the charity’s financial position through major funding bids to charitable trusts and foundations and appeals to 'High Net Worth' individuals.
    - Leading on commercial activity to ensure the charity can generate increased levels of earned income through the application of sector wide insight and innovation.
    - Inspiring others, advocating plans and ideas internally and externally.
    - Building and managing a wide network of donors, prospects and influential contacts through oral, written and persuasive communication.
    - Developing compelling applications and proposals of support that win the hearts and minds of charitable trusts, foundations and major donors.
    - Collating and analysing data regarding Open-Up’s performance against stated outcomes, delivering reports on a regular basis to the CEO and to the Trustees, as required.
    - Working with the team to develop the profile of the charity nationally.
    - Preparing reports as and when required for your team, funders, investors, customers and other bodies as required.
    - Undertaking any other appropriate duties as required.

  • Required skills WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

    We are looking for an individual with the following experience and competences:
    - A successful track record preparing funding proposals and securing major grants from charitable trusts and foundations; and donations from ‘High Net Worth' individuals.
    - Understanding of business strategy and the importance of sector wide intelligence to effectively market products and services and retain customer loyalty in relation to our Open School Orchestras programme.
    - Excellent event management skills.
    - Excellent interpersonal skills, including persuasive oral and written communication.
    - Proven ability in building working relationships with colleagues and confidence in networking and operating at senior levels internally and externally.
    - Experience of working in a target-led environment with a proven track record of delivering and reporting against those targets.
    - Ability to present information verbally or in writing including briefings and project reports to a range of audiences in a clear and confident manner.
    - Strong administrative and organisational skills including record keeping skills and excellent computer literacy.
    - Proven ability to work to deadlines and manage workload effectively.
    - A flexible work ethic being able to assist in other areas of the business as required.
    - A passion for the arts, equity and access.
    - Must be willing to travel.
    - Able to work in Bristol.
